{"id":7136,"date":"2023-08-16T13:23:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T13:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/?page_id=7136"},"modified":"2026-02-02T13:32:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T13:32:49","slug":"medication-for-dementia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/health-advice\/medication-for-dementia\/","title":{"rendered":"Medication for dementia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dementia is a progressive condition, and currently, there is no known cure.\u202fHowever, for some\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">types of dementia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, medication may help to relieve some of the\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/about-dementia\/what-are-the-symptoms-of-dementia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202for slow its progression.\u202fOur dementia specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/how-we-can-support-you\/what-is-an-admiral-nurse\/\">Admiral Nurses<\/a> explain some of the medication options and how to support a person with dementia to take their medicines. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What medication is used for dementia?<a id=\"what-medication\"><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Medication for dementia is mostly prescribed for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/alzheimers-disease\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However, people with other forms of dementia may also benefit from taking medication.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The main types of medication for Alzheimer\u2019s disease are called \u2018cholinesterase inhibitors\u2019. They do not cure dementia or stop it worsening, but may slow down the progression and ease some of the symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are three types of cholinesterase inhibitor that may be used for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">donepezil<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rivastigmine\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">galantamine<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cholinesterase inhibitors are usually prescribed for people with early to middle stage dementia, and tend to be most effective in the first six to 12 months of taking the medication.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some people may be prescribed another medication for Alzheimer\u2019s disease, called memantine. It is most often used for people who cannot take cholinesterase inhibitors, usually due to side effects or other medical conditions. It may be taken alongside a cholinesterase inhibitor in the middle to later stages of dementia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for vascular dementia<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Medications for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease do not help with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/vascular-dementia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">vascular dementia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However, people living with vascular dementia \u2013 which is caused by problems with blood supply to the brain, for example as the result of a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA, or \u2018mini stroke\u2019) \u2013 may be prescribed medicines to help with the underlying causes. These include medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for Lewy body dementia<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/dementia-with-lewy-bodies\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lewy body dementia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> may be prescribed a cholinesterase inhibitor or memantine. They may also be prescribed antipsychotic medication to help with hallucinations, but this should only be used in severe cases as they can cause significant side effects.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for frontotemporal dementia<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/frontotemporal-dementia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">frontotemporal dementia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are generally not prescribed Alzheimer\u2019s medication as it could make the symptoms worse. However, some people with frontotemporal dementia might be prescribed a specific type of antidepressant called a \u2018selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor\u2019 (SSRI) to help with uninhibited or compulsive behaviour and overeating.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for mixed dementia<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is no specific medication for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/mixed-dementia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mixed dementia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 where two or more forms of the condition occur together \u2013 but if the person\u2019s dementia is thought to include Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, they may be prescribed a cholinesterase inhibitor.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for Huntington\u2019s disease<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dementia is common in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/huntingtons-disease\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Huntington\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. There is no specific medication to treat this condition, but people with the diagnosis may be prescribed medicines to help with specific symptoms such as depression and twitching\/jerking movements.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for Parkinson\u2019s dementia<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/parkinsons\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> predominantly affects movement, but around one third of people with the diagnosis go on to develop dementia. While it cannot be cured, many people will take a drug called dopamine to help manage the symptoms. People with Parkinson\u2019s dementia may also be prescribed a cholinesterase inhibitor.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for posterior cortical atrophy (PCA)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/posterior-cortical-atrophy-pca\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PCA<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a rare type of dementia that most commonly develops between the ages of 50 and 65. Cholinesterase inhibitors may be helpful for people with PCA.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication for young onset dementia<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/young-onset-dementia\/what-is-young-onset-dementia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Young onset dementia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> refers to any form of dementia that develops before the age of 65. There is no specific medication for young onset dementia, but a person with the condition may be prescribed the medication suited to their particular form of dementia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How medication for dementia works<a id=\"works\"><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dementia medications work in different ways. For example:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cholinesterase inhibitors block the breakdown of a brain chemical called acetylcholine, which is needed for memory and learning\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Memantine limits excess levels of calcium in the brain, which may reduce the rate of damage to the brain cells\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to consider before taking dementia medication<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before starting medication for dementia, it is important to weigh up the pros and cons in conjunction with the doctor. They will carefully consider:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">whether the medication is suitable for the person\u2019s type of dementia\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the likelihood of side effects and whether they will be outweighed by the benefits\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">any other health conditions\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">potential interactions with other medicines the person is already taking<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the person\u2019s ability to take the medication as prescribed<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the possible side effects of dementia medication?<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All medications have some risk of side effects. These are listed in the patient information leaflet which comes in the packaging.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Common side effects of cholinesterase inhibitors include:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">diarrhoea, nausea and\/or vomiting\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">headaches\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dizziness\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">loss of appetite\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">muscle cramps\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fatigue\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">insomnia\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Common side effects of memantine include:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">constipation\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">drowsiness\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">headache\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hypertension (high blood pressure)\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dizziness\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some side effects may only occur when first starting the drug or when increasing the dose. To minimise the risk, the prescriber will often start with a low dose of medication and gradually increase it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you need advice around side effects, you can speak to the person\u2019s doctor or a community pharmacist.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How dementia medication can interact with other medicines<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When someone takes more than one medication they may interact with each other, causing side effects or reducing their effectiveness.
